Anthropic Brings Claude Processing to India

Anthropic will begin processing Claude artificial intelligence requests on servers in India through Amazon Bedrock in the coming weeks, addressing demand from banks, insurers and government agencies for greater control over where their sensitive data is handled.
Requests sent to Claude through Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) India endpoint will be processed in the country, Anthropic said on Monday. AWS describes its in-region option as keeping requests within the region selected by the customer.
The option will apply to organizations accessing Claude through Amazon Bedrock, AWS’s managed platform for building generative AI applications.
Anthropic did not provide an exact launch date or identify which Claude models would initially support in-country processing. It also did not disclose pricing.
Local inference can help companies meet internal data-residency policies and sector-specific compliance requirements. Anthropic said Claude deployments through Bedrock would include access controls and audit records for risk and compliance teams.
“India’s banks, insurers, telecoms, public and government agencies steward the data of a billion people,” said Irina Ghose, Anthropic’s managing director for India. “When that data can stay in India, AI moves from pilots into the systems that matter most.”
In-country inference covers where requests are processed. Organizations will still need to assess how information is stored, retained and accessed, as well as accountability for decisions made with AI assistance.
Anthropic described India as one of Claude’s largest markets and said local access had been a frequent request from organizations operating in the country. The company opened an office in Bengaluru in February and has since expanded its local enterprise and technical teams.
The company said Axis Bank is using Claude for engineering and employee productivity, while the National Payments Corporation of India is building its AiNxt agentic AI platform with the model. IndusInd Bank and Godrej Industries are also deploying Claude for internal knowledge, development and analysis work.
Indian technology services companies are also expanding their work with Anthropic. TCS plans to provide Claude access to 50,000 employees, while Infosys is combining the models with its Topaz platform and establishing an Anthropic center of excellence, the company said.
Anthropic is also working with Indian startups, research institutions and nonprofit groups, including projects involving drug and vaccine research, digital public infrastructure and cybersecurity testing.
The local inference option increases competition for enterprise AI work in India, where model developers and cloud providers are seeking customers in regulated industries that have been cautious about sending sensitive data to overseas infrastructure.
