India has become Anthropic’s second-largest market for Claude after the US, with roughly half of local usage focused on software development, UI work, and code debugging, a top executive at the AI firm said.
The technical share in India is about 50% versus about 30% globally, Guillaume Princen, Anthropic’s head of EMEA, said at an Accel developer event in Bengaluru, adding that startups account for about one-third of Claude Code conversations in the country.
Anthropic’s latest Economic Index shows India accounted for 7.2% of global Claude usage in September, compared with 21.6% for the US.
The company is expanding on the ground. Anthropic said it will open an office in Bengaluru in early 2026, its second Asia-Pacific hub after Tokyo.
Reuters reported the move and noted India’s rising demand for AI tools.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, 11 October, said Claude Code usage in India has risen fivefold since June.

How India deploys AI across critical sectors, such as education, healthcare, and agriculture, for over a billion people, will be essential in shaping the future of AI. <a href=”https://t.co/rt0baeqEeC”>pic.twitter.com/rt0baeqEeC</a></p>— Dario Amodei (@DarioAmodei) <a href=”https://twitter.com/DarioAmodei/status/1977010693460443151?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>October 11, 2025</a></blockquote> <script async src=”https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>
On the product side, Anthropic introduced Claude Sonnet 4.5 at the end of September and rolled out developer-facing upgrades such as a native VS Code extension, improved terminal workflows, and SDK helpers, positioning Claude for longer coding tasks and agentic workflows.
Princen said Anthropic aims to make it easier for Indian developers to build on Claude, including with more flexible API credits and rate limits, as it courts the country’s startup ecosystem.
Backed by Google, Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI executives and focuses on building “safe” AI systems.
