Nvidia Invests $5 Billion in Sutskever’s SSI

Partnership gives Safe Superintelligence access to Vera Rubin systems and expands its computing capacity tenfold.

  • Nvidia will invest $5 billion in Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the artificial intelligence startup co-founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, as part of a partnership that will give the company access to Nvidia’s next-generation computing hardware.

Nvidia and Safe Superintelligence announced the partnership on Monday but did not disclose its financial terms.

Bloomberg first reported the $5 billion figure, and a person briefed on the deal confirmed the size of the equity investment.

SSI will use Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform to increase its available computing capacity by about tenfold, the companies said. The additional infrastructure will allow the startup to expand research that it has conducted largely outside public view since its formation in 2024.

“We have research that is worthy of scaling up, and having access to a big NVIDIA computer will let us do so,” Sutskever said in a statement.

The two companies will also work together on the development of Nvidia’s current and future computing platforms. Nvidia said the collaboration would give it access to SSI’s research and views on the computing requirements of more advanced AI systems.

SSI was founded by Sutskever and Daniel Levy with the stated aim of developing safe superintelligence. Unlike many other AI startups, the company has not released commercial chatbots or developer products and has disclosed little about its underlying research.

Sutskever previously served as OpenAI’s chief scientist and helped lead research behind some of the company’s major AI systems before leaving in 2024.

The agreement gives SSI direct access to one of the most advanced generations of Nvidia hardware as AI developers compete for the computing capacity needed to train larger and more capable models.

For Nvidia, the investment deepens its financial ties to a major customer of its chips while giving the company a position in one of the industry’s most closely watched private AI laboratories.

The companies did not provide a timetable for deploying the Vera Rubin systems or disclose how much equity Nvidia will receive.
