  • Amazon India plans to invest $12.7 billion in India by 2030 to expand cloud and artificial-intelligence (AI) infrastructure in a step the company says will support small businesses and government-school students as the country accelerates AI adoption.

The investment builds on an earlier commitment made in 2023 by Amazon Web Services (AWS), when it first flagged a multi-billion-dollar push to scale up its data-centre and cloud footprint in India.

Under the new plan, Amazon says it aims to extend the benefits of AI tools and services to over 15 million small and medium businesses, helping them improve operations, reach customers and scale digitally.

At the same time, the company has committed to reach around 4 million students in government schools by 2030 with AI-literacy and career-awareness programs. The initiative will include curriculum support, hands-on learning modules and teacher training, aligned with the broader national push for digital skills.

“AI has the potential to be the great equaliser in India, breaking down barriers of language, literacy and access,” said Samir Kumar, Country Manager of Amazon India.

The funds will go toward expanding cloud-computing capacity, data centres and AI-ready infrastructure, including enhanced networking and storage, as well as new services tailored for India’s diverse market.

AWS has already committed about $8.3 billion to bolster cloud infrastructure in states such as Maharashtra.

Amazon said the expanded AI infrastructure will serve businesses across sectors, from banking and manufacturing to aviation and logistics, and added that the new investment will also accelerate its push into consumer-facing AI features for Amazon’s e-commerce platform in India.

Indian government officials also welcomed the move.

“Education in the age of AI is about empowering every learner to use these technologies to solve India’s unique challenges,” added Abhishek Singh, additional secretary MeitY and CEO of the IndiaAI Mission.
