US-based AI-powered digital onboarding solutions firm HyperVerge has won a two-year government contract worth ₹1 crore to deploy its face recognition technology in public-sector projects aimed at preventing fraud in large-scale recruitment and examination processes.
The contract was awarded under the IndiaAI Face Authentication Challenge, an initiative of IndiaAI under the Digital India Corporation of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
The program sought AI systems capable of detecting duplicate applications and impersonation in large-scale government recruitment drives that attract millions of candidates every year.
HyperVerge’s system uses one-to-many facial matching to detect duplicate applicants across massive databases, identifying the same person even when images differ in lighting, pose, age, or quality.
According to the company, the system can flag duplicate identities even when low-resolution or poorly captured photos are used.
“All deployments are designed to comply with applicable data protection laws and purpose-limitation requirements,” the company said.
In 2024, HyperVerge’s facial recognition technology was independently benchmarked against standards set by the US Department of Homeland Security.
Kedar Kulkarni, CEO of HyperVerge, said national-scale identity systems demand high levels of accuracy, bias control, and resilience against adversarial attacks.
The technology will now be used in public-sector institutions that conduct large national examinations, where verification failures can affect millions of candidates.
The IndiaAI challenge, launched in October 2025 under the IndiaAI Application Development Initiative, invited startups and companies to build secure, scalable AI systems for photo verification and application de-duplication.
Up to ten shortlisted teams received ₹5 lakh each to refine their solutions, while the top teams were eligible for deployment contracts worth up to ₹1 crore.
IndiaAI serves as the implementation arm of the broader IndiaAI Mission, which aims to expand the use of artificial intelligence across government services while promoting responsible and inclusive AI development in India.
