Adani in Talks With Meta, Google, Flipkart on Data Centers: Report

Reported talks show Adani widening its data-center push as demand for AI and cloud capacity grows in India

  • Adani Group is in early talks with Meta Platforms, Alphabet’s Google and Walmart-backed Flipkart on potential partnerships in its data-center business, as the Indian conglomerate pushes deeper into digital infrastructure, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.

The discussions are private, no sites have been finalized.

Adani is exploring locations across Indian states as it seeks to position itself as a provider of land, renewable energy and infrastructure for hyperscale data centers and cloud hubs.

The talks form part of the group’s broader $100 billion push into digital infrastructure, an effort Gautam Adani has linked to renewable energy-powered data centers and sovereign AI capacity in India.

Adani already has an existing relationship with Google through AdaniConnex, its joint venture with EdgeConneX.

The companies said in October that Google would invest about $15 billion over five years to build what they described as India’s largest AI infrastructure hub in Visakhapatnam, with AdaniConnex among the partners involved.

Bloomberg said the current talks would go beyond those commitments.

India’s largest business groups are racing to secure a role in AI-linked infrastructure. In November, Digital Connexion, a venture backed by Reliance Industries Ltd, Brookfield and Digital Realty, signed a pact to invest $11 billion in an AI data-center campus in Andhra Pradesh.

The same month, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) said private equity firm TPG would invest $1 billion in its AI data center subsidiary HyperVault, with the two companies planning to invest as much as ₹18,000 crore over time in AI-ready data centers.

Global technology companies are also expanding in India.

Amazon Web Services said in May 2023 that it would invest $12.7 billion in cloud infrastructure in the country by 2030, while Bloomberg reported in September that OpenAI was seeking local partners for an India data center with at least 1 gigawatt of capacity.
