India’s aviation regulator has ordered Air India to take corrective action after the airline sent an unapproved Boeing 777-200LR on its Delhi-Vancouver route, a lapse that forced the aircraft to turn back mid-flight and return to Delhi last week.
The route was cleared only for the Boeing 777-300ER, and action has also been taken against an airline official over the error, Press Trust of India reported, citing officials.
Flight AI185 departed Delhi last Thursday, 19 March, but returned after more than seven hours in the air after it was discovered that the Boeing 777-200LR deployed on the route lacked approval for operations into Canada, in an incident first reported by The Times of India.
Air India said at the time that the flight returned because of an “operational issue” and in line with standard operating procedures, adding that the aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew disembarked without incident.
Passengers were provided overnight accommodation and flown to Vancouver the following day on a Boeing 777-300ER, while the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) sought a report and told the airline to strengthen internal checks to avoid a repeat.
The Economic Times reported that the airline’s internal system failed to flag the aircraft mismatch because requirements for Canada-bound operations had not been updated.
