Hackers claim to have obtained 78.6 million records linked to a Snowflake account, though the company says the breach has no impact on players.

  • Rockstar Games has been hit by another cyberattack, marking the second such incident involving the Grand Theft Auto developer in three years.

The breach came to light over the weekend after a hacking group claimed responsibility, Reuters reported.

The group, which calls itself ShinyHunters, said it had accessed Rockstar data through a third-party cloud service and warned it could release the material online.

However, Rockstar said the impact was limited. “We can confirm that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach. This incident has no impact on our organisation or our players,” a spokesperson told BBC.

In an online exchange with Reuters, a representative of the group said it had obtained around 78.6 million records linked to Rockstar’s account with Snowflake.

The hackers said the breach stemmed from compromised data associated with Anodot, an AI-based analytics provider. Snowflake said its own systems had not been breached.

“This incident is not a compromise of Snowflake’s platform or environment, but rather a result of a compromise of Anodot,” a Snowflake spokesperson said, adding that affected accounts were disabled after unusual activity was detected.

The nature of the data involved has not been independently verified.

Cybersecurity reports suggest it may include internal metrics such as in-game revenue figures, player behaviour data and information linked to online titles including Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Online.

The hacking group said it would release the data after its demands were not met, but did not provide further details.

ShinyHunters has previously been linked to high-profile breaches, including an attack on Ticketmaster, and is known for targeting large organisations and attempting to extort them using stolen data.

The incident follows a major breach in 2022, when British hacker Arion Kurtaj leaked early footage and data related to the then-unreleased Grand Theft Auto VI after gaining unauthorised access to Rockstar’s systems. He was later given an indefinite hospital order.

Kurtaj was part of the hacking group Lapsus$, which carried out a series of attacks on major companies.

The latest case comes amid broader concerns over attacks on cloud-based systems. More than 160 customers of Snowflake were targeted in data theft and extortion attempts during 2024.
