OpenAI said on Monday it is launching a new enterprise-focused business unit, backed by more than $4 billion to help companies deploy artificial intelligence systems across core operations.
The new entity, called the OpenAI Deployment Company, will embed specialized engineers inside organizations to help integrate AI systems into workflows, software infrastructure and operational processes, the company said.
OpenAI also said it has agreed to acquire Tomoro, an enterprise AI consulting and engineering firm. The acquisition will add about 150 engineers and deployment specialists to the new business unit after the deal closes.
The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the coming months.
The Deployment Company is being launched with backing from 19 investment firms, consultancies and system integrators, including TPG, Advent, Bain Capital, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and SoftBank Corp. Consulting firms including Bain and Co., Capgemini and McKinsey and Co. are also participating in the initiative.
According to OpenAI, the partner network collectively works with or invests in more than 2,000 businesses globally.
“AI is becoming capable of doing increasingly meaningful work inside organizations,” Denise Dresser, Chief Revenue Officer at OpenAI, said in a statement.
“The challenge now is helping companies integrate these systems into the infrastructure and workflows that power their businesses,” she added.
OpenAI said more than one million businesses currently use its products and application programming interfaces.
