Debjani Ghosh ran Nasscom for six years before leaving in late 2024 to build India’s first dedicated frontier-tech hub inside the government. As a Distinguished Fellow at NITI Aayog, she is chief architect of the NITI Frontier Tech Hub, which is meant to work out what AI and other emerging technologies will do to India’s economy and public systems, and what the state should fund and regulate before the technology arrives at scale.
Before this, she spent several years at Intel, where she led its South Asia business, and became the first woman to head Nasscom. Lately she has argued that infrastructure and compute alone will not deliver AI’s value, that skilling and inclusion have to come first, and that India should claim a larger role in shaping how the technology is governed worldwide.
The NITI Frontier Tech Hub is new, and she is the person brought in to build it. Its own stated job is to see the big technology shifts coming and get the country ready for them. The wager behind it is that being ready for a technology matters as much as building it.
