  • OpenAI has appointed Uber’s former India and South Asia president Prabhjeet Singh as Managing Director for India, as the ChatGPT maker deepens its presence in one of its fastest-growing markets.

Singh will join in September and report to Kiran Mani, OpenAI’s Managing Director for Asia Pacific.

He will be OpenAI’s senior-most executive in India, overseeing consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement and operations.

Singh spent 11 years at Uber, where he led the company’s mobility business across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Uber confirmed his departure on Friday, saying he was leaving for another leadership opportunity and thanking him for his contribution to its India business.

An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad, Singh joined Uber from McKinsey and Co., where he was an associate partner.

He received IIM Ahmedabad’s Young Alumni Achiever’s Award in 2022 for corporate leadership.

The appointment comes as OpenAI expands its India operations.

In February, the Sam Altman-led company launched OpenAI for India at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.

OpenAI said at the time that India had more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users and that it planned to open offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru, in addition to its presence in New Delhi.

As part of the initiative, OpenAI and Tata Group are partnering to develop local AI-ready data center capacity.

OpenAI said it would become the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services Ltd’s HyperVault data center business, starting with 100 megawatts of capacity and with the potential to scale to 1 gigawatt.

OpenAI has also announced an enterprise collaboration with Tata Group and partnerships with Indian companies including JioHotstar, Eternal, Pine Labs, Cars24, HCLTech, PhonePe, CRED and MakeMyTrip.
