  • India’s Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is building an AI-powered common data platform to bring official economic statistics into a single searchable system, Business Standard reported citing people aware of the matter.

The platform is being designed as a first-of-its-kind common data platform for India’s official economic statistics and will be integrated with a large language model, or LLM, for easier access to data, according to the report.

The system is expected to give policymakers, researchers and businesses one place to search and use government economic data instead of navigating multiple databases and departmental portals.

The report said the platform will provide AI-powered real-time analytics and reporting capabilities.

Bahwan CyberTek, or BCT, is building the platform. The company’s system is being designed to integrate data from the National Accounts Division’s 18 business units and hundreds of disparate data sources into a unified data ecosystem. It is expected to automate data integration, improve data quality and create a central repository as a single source of truth.

The project addresses a long-running problem in official statistics: fragmentation across ministries, datasets and access formats. Once completed, the platform could let users compare and reuse official data without shifting between portals and spreadsheets.

MoSPI has also been exploring AI use in official statistics more broadly. A recent MoSPI-linked use-case document said an AI-powered contextual chatbot on the ministry’s website could help users access datasets, reports and statistical documents more easily.

The platform, if implemented well, could improve transparency and reduce delays in data access. The more difficult test will be governance: data quality, audit trails, version control and clear disclosure of how the LLM retrieves and interprets official statistics.
