  • Stability AI has raised $76 million in Series B funding, drawing investment from some of the world’s largest music and entertainment companies as the Stable Diffusion developer builds closer commercial ties with the industries most exposed to generative AI.

The round takes Stability AI’s total funding to $232 million and includes Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group and Electronic Arts, alongside AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures, the company said on Tuesday.

The investor mix is notable because several of the new backers are also partners or potential customers for Stability’s technology. Over the past year, the startup has struck agreements with Universal Music, Warner Music and EA to develop generative AI tools for music and game-production workflows.

Stability said the fresh capital will go toward expanding its suite of image, video and music-generation tools as well as its professional-services business.

“This funding is an affirmation of our vision where generative AI empowers every producer, musician, and storyteller,” Chief Executive Prem Akkaraju said in the company’s announcement.

Akkaraju took over as CEO in 2024 as Stability sought to steady the business following a period of management upheaval and legal disputes.

Copyright remains an important backdrop to its expansion. Stability largely prevailed in a UK lawsuit brought by Getty Images over the use of copyrighted material in AI training, although a separate Getty case in the United States is still proceeding.

The company has also faced litigation from co-founder Cyrus Hodes, who sued Stability and fellow co-founder Emad Mostaque in 2023 over the sale of his stake.
