OpenAI Tests Sponsored Agents Inside ChatGPT

The new ad format lets users question an advertiser’s AI agent directly, while Shopify and HubSpot integrations expand campaign management.

  • OpenAI is testing sponsored agents in ChatGPT, allowing users who click an ad to start a separate, clearly labeled conversation with an AI agent representing the advertiser.

The feature is initially being tested with selected advertisers in the US. Users can ask follow-up questions about a product or service inside ChatGPT before deciding whether to visit the advertiser’s website.

OpenAI said the sponsored interaction will remain separate from both ChatGPT’s normal answers and the user’s original conversation.

“The conversation with a sponsored agent is distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and separate from the original conversation that the user started in ChatGPT,” the company said.

OpenAI is also expanding tools for advertisers. Businesses can use natural-language prompts in ChatGPT Work to create, update and analyze campaigns through the Ads Manager plugin.

Ads Manager will also suggest copy and imagery based on an advertiser’s landing page and campaign objective. An optional feature can adapt existing headlines and descriptions to the context of a conversation and translate them into a user’s preferred language.

The company is also integrating ChatGPT Ads with HubSpot and Shopify. HubSpot users can create ads, track performance and follow up on leads, while US Shopify merchants can manage ChatGPT campaigns through a dedicated app.

The Shopify integration is set to expand to other markets where ChatGPT Ads are available from September 23.
