Birla AI Labs has launched Yug-1, a time-series foundation model designed to forecast trends, identify patterns, and detect anomalies across complex datasets, marking a new step in India’s AI research ambitions.

Ananya Birla, founder of Birla AI Labs, took to LinkedIn to announce the launch of Yug-1, the lab’s first Time Series Foundation Model (TSFM), aimed at helping businesses make better decisions using data that changes over time.

In the post, Birla highlighted the need to look beyond language-based AI and focus on data that drives businesses and economies.

“Most of the conversation around AI today is about language. But so much of the data that actually runs businesses and economies moves through time: demand and supply, equipment performance, financial signals, infrastructure use,” she wrote.

According to Birla, Yug-1 has outperformed other first-generation time-series foundation models on the GiftEval benchmark and delivered competitive results against newer-generation models. She also highlighted the pace of its development, stating that the Frontier Research team took the model from training to deployment in under six months.

The model is now available on GitHub and Hugging Face, allowing developers, researchers and businesses to experiment with it, evaluate its performance and explore potential applications.

Further, the launch has prompted discussions among technology professionals and business leaders about the potential and limitations of AI models designed for forecasting.

Tushar Raina, Software Engineer II at Meta, pointed to a key challenge in deploying such models in real-world environments.

“Time series is the one modality foundation models have mostly ignored,” Raina said, questioning whether Yug-1 would hold up against live data, where changing patterns can undermine the performance observed in historical backtests.

Chinu Kala, founder of Rubans Accessories, welcomed the initiative and said, “Love seeing foundational AI research being built in India with a global audience in mind. And I love the invitation to test it, challenge it and give feedback.”

Chinatan Dave, Chief of Staff at the Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO), highlighted the model’s potential relevance to Indian industries.

“Language gets the headlines, but so much of India runs on time-series: power demand, monsoon-linked supply, logistics, equipment health, MSME cash flows,” Dave said.

He added that a model capable of reliably forecasting these variables could have significant implications for Indian industry.

“Going from training to deployment in under six months, and opening it up on GitHub and Hugging Face, is exactly how research reaches the real world. Built in India, for the world,” Dave said.

    Frontier research

Yug-1 builds on the broader vision behind Birla AI Labs, which Ananya Birla officially launched during the India AI Summit 2026.

Addressing global technology leaders and policymakers at the summit, Birla described the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence as a “Cambrian explosion of possibilities” and called the technological shift a seminal moment in human progress.

The lab was established with a dual mandate. Its first role is to serve as a central AI hub for the Aditya Birla Group, developing and deploying solutions across its global businesses in manufacturing, financial services and retail.

Its second mandate is to operate as a frontier research organization focused on original AI research and translating scientific advances into products for the wider market.

Yug-1 represents an early example of the second objective in action. According to Birla, the research behind the model has also been presented at NeurIPS 2025, ICML 2026, the World Summit AI, and university campuses across India, Europe and the UK.

The team plans further engagement with researchers and industry leaders at NeurIPS 2026 and other global institutions.
