  • Google CEO Sundar Pichai said he uses artificial intelligence agents to monitor developments across the company, cutting the time spent reviewing internal updates and tracking computing resources.

Speaking to Alex Heath on the Sources podcast published October 21, Pichai said following Google’s model-development work could previously take about an hour each day as he worked through updates from different teams and internal chat groups.

“It could easily take me an hour a day to kind of catch up, what’s happened in the last 24 hours, right?” he said. “But now I have agents running which summarize and bring that information to me. I can still go deeper, and I do so often.”

The agents help him follow work across pre-training, mid-training and post-training teams and provide information about Google’s computing infrastructure, including utilization and efficiency across different product areas.

Pichai said the tools provide information and analysis, but major decisions, particularly those involving the allocation of computing resources, remain with human executives.

He also highlighted the advantage of cloud-based agents that operate around the clock, retain context and continue working as users move between tasks.

Discussing how AI agents will interact with the wider internet, Pichai said they would increasingly use both browsers and specialized protocols to access websites and services.

Google is developing both approaches. Its Google-Agent system can navigate websites on users’ behalf, while its Universal Commerce Protocol supports transactions between AI agents and retailers.

Pichai said standardized protocols could eventually offer a more scalable approach, although browser-based interactions would remain important as the technology develops.
