Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s new Data Centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute in Bhubaneswar on October 25, adding computing capacity and a dedicated training facility for the country’s financial sector.
According to the Press Information Bureau, the data centre complex has been designed to meet the RBI’s computing requirements and provide secure and resilient infrastructure for the central bank and the wider financial system.
The complex comprises four data centres that will host mission-critical payment and settlement systems as well as other RBI initiatives. The government said the facility has been certified to the Uptime Institute’s Tier IV standard, the highest level in its data-centre classification framework.
The infrastructure is also designed to support future expansion as the RBI’s dependence on digital systems grows.
The Cybersecurity Training Institute will focus on training, research and capability development for the banking, financial services and insurance sector. Its areas of work will include cybersecurity, enterprise technology, artificial intelligence, quantum computing and other emerging technologies relevant to financial institutions.
Modi said the facilities were intended to strengthen both the reliability of digital banking and the financial sector’s defenses against cyber threats.
“As India grows economically stronger, we must protect our banking system from cyber looters and cyber terrorists,” he said during the inauguration, according to an official PIB release.
He also said modern cybersecurity requires updated training infrastructure and skilled personnel rather than relying on older defensive practices.
