  • Elon Musk said SpaceX has closed $40 billion in debt financing to buy Nvidia chips for artificial intelligence infrastructure, warning that tighter credit markets could drive widespread failures among AI cloud providers.

In response to a post on X by Social Capital founder Chamath Palihapitiya, Musk said SpaceX secured the financing because of its investment-grade credit rating and revenue from its Starlink satellite internet and rocket launch businesses.

“SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we’re investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue,” Musk wrote.

Musk said the financing primarily comprises callable debt for graphics processing units (GPUs) scheduled for delivery in the first two quarters of 2027.

Bloomberg had earlier reported that SpaceX was in talks with banks and investors to raise $40 billion to purchase Nvidia chips. The proposed structure reportedly involves a special purpose vehicle to keep the debt off SpaceX’s balance sheet and preserve its investment-grade credit rating.

Goldman Sachs was leading discussions with investors, including Apollo Global Management, according to the report.

Musk also predicted a sharp shakeout among AI infrastructure providers, warning that more than 200 so-called neocloud companies could face widespread failures and consolidation.

“That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation,” he wrote, adding that only a small number would survive.

Neoclouds provide computing capacity tailored to AI workloads, relying heavily on expensive GPUs, data centers and customer demand.

The financing comes as SpaceX expands its AI business. Its Super Intelligence, or SI, division generated $7.56 billion in third-quarter revenue, helping lift companywide revenue 161% to $14.58 billion.

SpaceX forecasts first-quarter 2027 revenue of $33 billion to $37 billion, above the $22.2 billion analyst estimate compiled by LSEG.
