  • India’s apex audit body, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), is gearing up to revamp its operations with generative artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and optical character recognition (OCR), Mint reported.

The tools will help streamline audits, reduce manual workloads, and enhance accuracy in detecting financial discrepancies across government programs and departments, the report said, citing deputy CAGs A.M. Bajaj and K.S. Subramanian.

The move marks a significant push toward a data-driven, technology-enabled approach to public accountability.

The new digital toolkit will prioritize voucher verification and risk detection, enabling more agile audits—including hybrid and remote reviews—across areas such as GST compliance, stamp duties, and public works, the report said.

By leveraging AI, the CAG aims to sharpen anomaly detection, proactively flag high-risk areas, and conduct targeted audits with greater precision.

The institution currently oversees a vast portfolio: 700 central public sector units, 1,600 state enterprises, 485 central autonomous bodies, and thousands of panchayats and urban local bodies.

The expanded capabilities are also expected to support cross-sector audits in areas such as urban solid waste management, construction worker welfare, and District Mineral Funds.

Other programs under the CAG’s purview include the Jal Jeevan Mission, Green India Mission, Smart Cities initiative, and MSME and skill development schemes.

The AI-first approach will not only improve audit depth and speed but also help raise new benchmarks in transparency and governance, the report added.
