ChatGPT parent OpenAI has announced plans to open its first corporate office in New Delhi by the end of this year.
The Sam Altman-led, Microsoft-backed AI company’s move signals a shift in its strategy and indicates that it will expand into its fastest-growing global markets.
The move follows the appointment of a local public policy and partnerships lead in India, the company’s second-largest user base after the US.
OpenAI’s decision to open its first India office builds on the company’s recent introduction of a ₹399 (about $4.50) subscription plan tailored specifically for the Indian market.
OpenAI has just one employee in India, Pragya Misra, who leads the company’s public policy and partnerships initiatives.
The leading AI company also reportedly seeks to expand its local team to liaise with Indian government bodies, businesses, developers, and academic institutions.
OpenAI’s expansion plan aligns with India’s ambitious $1.2 billion IndiaAI Mission, focused on building large and small language models for the region and bolstering India’s position as a global AI leader.
Expressing optimism about India’s AI potential, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, “India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission.”
He added that opening the Delhi office and building a local team was “an important first step” in OpenAI’s commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India.”
The increased local presence demonstrates the company’s intention to establish OpenAI partnerships across the Indian ecosystem and advance AI adoption among the country’s 1.4 billion population.
OpenAI will also host its inaugural Education Summit and Developer Day in India later this year.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s IT minister, highlighted the strategic importance of OpenAI’s move and said, “OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. As part of the IndiaAI Mission, we are building the ecosystem for trusted and inclusive AI, and we welcome OpenAI’s partnership in advancing this vision to ensure the benefits of AI reach every citizen.”
