OpenAI on Monday struck a multi-year deal with AMD to supply chips and build AI data-center capacity, beginning with 1 gigawatt (GW) of Instinct MI450 GPUs in the second half of 2026 and growing to 6GW.

This strategic alliance will directly compete with chip leader Nvidia.

The announcement comes weeks after Nvidia committed $100 billion to the ChatGPT-maker. Oracle and SoftBank have also partnered for five data centers under Stargate.

“We are thrilled to partner with OpenAI to deliver AI compute at a massive scale,” said Lisa Su, chair and CEO, AMD. “This partnership brings the best of AMD and OpenAI together to create a true win-win, enabling the world’s most ambitious AI buildout and advancing the entire AI ecosystem.”

Calling the partnership a “true win-win for both,” the two will deepen multi-generational hardware and software collaboration, starting with the MI300X and continuing with the MI350X series.

“This partnership is a major step in building the compute capacity needed to realize AI’s full potential,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI.

Additionally, OpenAI will receive warrants for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock, which will be awarded in phases.

At DevDay, Sam Altman introduced AgentKit, a toolset to help developers and enterprises build, deploy, and optimize AI agents. OpenAI is also expanding evaluation features, including datasets, trace grading, automated prompt optimization, and third-party model support, to improve agent performance.

ChatGPT users will soon access third-party apps such as Booking.com, Spotify, Figma, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, and Zillow without leaving the chat window, using ChatKit.

ChatKit lets developers embed custom chat-based agents seamlessly into apps and websites.

With ChatKit, Canva said it saved over two weeks building a developer support agent and integrated it in under an hour.

“This support agent will transform the way developers engage with our docs by turning it into a conversational experience, making it easy to build apps and integrations on Canva,” the company said in the blog.

As per MarketsandMarkets, the AI agents market size was valued at $5.25 billion in 2024 and is expected to hit $52.62 billion by 2030.
