Balaraman Ravindran has spent decades working on reinforcement learning, a field that sits deep inside AI’s technical foundations. As head of the Department of Data Science and AI at IIT Madras, he has helped shape major AI institutions and research programs.
His work spans research, teaching, institution building and policy engagement, including responsible AI. Ravindran’s growing role in governance discussions reflects a larger shift in the field: technical AI and responsible AI can no longer be treated as separate conversations.
Ravindran represents a deliberate approach to AI that connects mathematical depth, real-world systems and the long-term work of building trusted technologies.
