Cursor Launches Origin as GitHub Rival

The new code-hosting service arrives as GitHub works through a run of reliability problems.

  • Cursor has moved deeper into GitHub’s territory with Origin, a code-hosting service that lets developers store repositories, review changes and merge code inside the AI coding platform.

Origin began rolling out in early beta on August 17 across Cursor’s paid plans. It includes repositories, pull requests, code browsing and GitHub synchronization, with Cursor promising more features designed for AI coding agents.

The launch came the same day GitHub suffered a major outage affecting APIs, Actions, pull requests and other services.

GitHub said the incident lasted 7 hours and 47 minutes, although most services recovered much earlier.

At the peak, error rates reached about 20% for web and API traffic and about 50% for archive and raw-content downloads.

GitHub traced the disruption to network saturation on load balancers in its Central US data center, initially triggered by an autoscaling problem and then amplified by retry traffic.

The outage added to a difficult stretch for the Microsoft-owned developer platform. GitHub reported eight incidents that degraded services in July, after six in June and nine in May.

Cursor is not requiring users to leave GitHub. Existing repositories can be synchronized with Origin and displayed beside repositories hosted directly by Cursor. For projects imported from GitHub, pushes continue to GitHub, which remains the source of truth.

Pull requests on synchronized repositories work in both directions. Comments made in Sursor are posted to GitHub, while replies and directions on GitHub appear in Cursor.

That approach lowers the cost of experimenting with a second code host without immediately moving an organization’s entire development infrastructure.

Origin also brings source-code hosting closer to Cursor’s AI agents. The company said future “agent-native” features will build on the combination of code, pull requests and agents inside the same environment.

The launch comes days after Cursor confirmed it had been acquired by SpaceX, completing a deal that began with an AI partnership earlier this year.

Cursor said Origin is enabled for paid users in early beta, except at enterprise organizations where administrators choose to opt out.
