  • GAIL (India) Ltd, the country’s largest natural gas transmission and marketing company, and RailTel Corp. of India Ltd, a telecom infrastructure provider under the Ministry of Railways, have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore opportunities in telecom and digital infrastructure by combining their network assets.

The agreement aims to integrate GAIL’s nationwide gas pipeline infrastructure with RailTel’s telecom network to support digital connectivity initiatives and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

GAIL operates about 18,000 km of natural gas pipelines across India. RailTel manages an optical fiber network of 63,000 route km along railway tracks, a 21,000-km city access network, nearly 11,000 points of presence, and more than 1,100 telecom towers.

The MoU was signed by S. S. Agrawal, Executive Director (O&M-CO) at GAIL, and J. S. Marwah, Company Secretary and General Manager (Law) at RailTel.

“This partnership is in line with our vision to integrate energy and digital infrastructure while leveraging emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence,” said Deepak Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL, in a statement.

Sanjai Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of RailTel, said the collaboration would allow both companies to use their network infrastructure and technical capabilities to expand reliable communication services.

“RailTel is committed to strengthening India’s digital backbone through robust and secure communication infrastructure,” Kumar said.

The companies said the partnership aims to improve utilization of existing infrastructure, expand secure digital connectivity and support the growth of India’s digital economy.
