Andhra Pradesh has approved a proposal from a Google subsidiary to build a one-gigawatt hyperscale data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam, an investment the state values at about $10 billion (₹87,520 crore).
The clearance came at the State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB) meeting chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday, 8 October.
The project, to be executed by Raiden Infotech India Ltd, is being planned as a three-campus cluster across Tarluvada, Adavivaram and Rambilli on the city’s northern and southern fringes, with the government pitching Visakhapatnam as an emerging national hub for cloud and AI workloads.
“This is not just an investment; it’s a vision being realized. Andhra Pradesh is proud to host one of the world’s largest technology investments, a testament to our policy strength, governance, and our people’s capability. The Google Data Center in Vizag will anchor our journey towards becoming the AI capital of India and a global hub for digital innovation,” Naidu said in an official statement.
The SIPB endorsed positioning Visakhapatnam as “AI City Vizag,” with officials saying the project would act as a “cornerstone for modern economic infrastructure” and catalyse sectors from power and fibre optics to e-governance.
“This strategic branding mirrors the catalytic effect of early anchor investments that transformed regional technology landscapes, and is designed to anchor a global hub for AI, Cloud, and Data Analytics aligned with Digital India, IndiaAI Mission, and Make in India,” the release said.
State projections showed the data center cluster could support an average of 188,000 direct and indirect jobs annually during the initial five years of operations (2028–32), and add roughly ₹10,518 crore a year to Andhra’s gross state domestic product over that period.
The modelling references cited by the state include Google’s own economic analysis and an assessment by Access Partnership.
Officials said the government would offer single-window clearances and “plug-and-play” infrastructure coordinated by the Economic Development Board and the IT, Electronics and Communications Department, alongside commitments on reliable power and water and integration of renewable energy.
Those elements are part of the pitch to bring large, power-hungry AI and cloud facilities to the state.
The SIPB meeting cleared 30 proposals worth ₹1.14 trillion across sectors including IT, fuel, tourism, aerospace and food processing. The Google-linked project is the largest of those approvals.
