Google said it is making the biggest upgrade to its search box in more than 25 years, adding artificial intelligence features that can answer complex queries, generate interactive results and run agents in the background.
The changes, announced at Google I/O, deepen the company’s shift from conventional search results toward AI-generated answers and task-based search.
Google said AI Mode has surpassed 1 billion monthly users one year after launch, while AI Overviews now reaches 2.5 billion monthly users, Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai said.
The redesigned search box will expand dynamically, support longer questions and use AI-powered suggestions that go beyond autocomplete.
Users will be able to search using text, images, files, videos or Chrome tabs as inputs, Google said.
Pichai said the company aims to make advanced AI capabilities widely accessible.
“We want to bring it to as many people as possible,” he said, referring to ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and reduce costs of AI systems.
Google is also rolling out information agents inside Search. The agents will monitor the web, news, social posts and real-time data such as finance, shopping and sports information, then send synthesized updates when conditions set by users are met.
Information agents will launch first for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers this summer.
The company said AI Mode will use Gemini 3.5 Flash as its default model globally.
Liz Reid, Vice-President of Search, said the system can create tailored outputs based on user queries.
“You could send an alert to track market movements in a particular sector with very specific parameters… and it will then keep track of those changes and let you know when the conditions are met,” she said.
Google is also allowing users to ask follow-up questions from AI Overviews and continue into AI Mode, with context carried into the conversation and supporting links updated as the search deepens.
Search will also generate custom interfaces in real time, including visual tools, tables, graphs and simulations. Google said those generative UI capabilities will be available free to all Search users this summer.
Users will be able to build custom dashboards and trackers, or mini apps, directly in Search using its Antigravity agentic coding technology. That feature will arrive in the coming months, starting with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US, the company said.
The overhaul comes as Google faces pressure from AI rivals including OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity, whose products have challenged traditional web search.
