  • Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh will lead India’s delegation to the inaugural United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva on July 6 and 7.

Convened under UN General Assembly Resolution 79/325, the forum is the UN’s first universal platform for advancing international cooperation on AI, following the adoption of the Global Digital Compact in 2024.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Geneva meeting will receive the first annual report of the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI (IISPA), which provides an independent scientific assessment of artificial intelligence, including its capabilities, emerging opportunities, and risks.

Delegates will hold discussions across four broad themes: the social and economic implications of AI, bridging AI divides, safe and trustworthy AI, and human rights in the context of artificial intelligence.

The ministry said the forum aims to strengthen international cooperation on AI governance while complementing national, regional, and multi-stakeholder initiatives. It is also expected to support capacity building, particularly for developing countries, to help ensure AI contributes to sustainable development.

The opening session will be addressed by UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the United Nations Egriselda López, and Permanent Representative of Estonia to the United Nations Rein Tammsaar.

The second session of the Global Dialogue on AI Governance is scheduled to be held in New York in May 2027.
