Meta Platforms Inc. has hired the founders and team behind AI startup Dreamer, according to an internal memo reviewed by Bloomberg, as it deepens its push into artificial intelligence agents amid intensifying competition for talent.
The hires bring in a group focused on tools that allow users to build and deploy AI agents, systems designed to carry out tasks on behalf of users with limited input.
The team will join Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, the unit led by Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, according to the memo.
The arrangement allows Dreamer to remain a separate legal entity, while Meta gains a non-exclusive license to its technology, a structure increasingly used by large technology companies to secure talent and intellectual property without pursuing full acquisitions.
Financial terms were not disclosed. Investors are expected to receive returns above their original investment, Bloomberg reported.
Dreamer co-founder David Singleton confirmed the move in a LinkedIn post, pointing to alignment with Meta’s leadership on the direction of AI-driven software.
“It was clear right away that we share the same vision of the future, one where billions of people have the power to create software that makes their lives better,” he wrote, referring to discussions with Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg.
The hiring reflects Meta’s growing focus on AI agents, an emerging category attracting heavy investment as companies race to define how users interact with artificial intelligence systems. Rivals including OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are also investing heavily in agent-based technologies.
In an internal note announcing the hires, Wang said the company is prioritizing agents that are “personalized and always on,” with the ability to operate across devices and surfaces.
Dreamer was founded by a group of senior technology executives. Singleton previously served as Chief Technology Officer at Stripe and held engineering roles at Google’s Android division.
Chief Design Officer Nicholas Jitkoff worked on Google Chrome OS. The team also includes Hugo Barra, who previously led Meta’s virtual reality division before leaving in 2021.
The startup had previously raised about $56 million at a valuation of roughly $500 million, Bloomberg News reported in 2024.
For early-stage AI firms, joining larger platforms is becoming an increasingly common path as competition for computing power, distribution and talent intensifies, with acqui-hire style deals emerging as a preferred route.
