Mitesh Khapra is one of the leading voices in India’s multilingual AI movement. At IIT Madras and AI4Bharat, his work focuses on open-source datasets, tools, models and applications for Indian languages. His research tackles a structural limitation in much of global AI: systems are often built around English and later adapted for other languages. Khapra’s work starts from India’s linguistic diversity instead. 

By helping build open datasets and models, he is contributing to the tools needed for AI systems that can serve users across regions, languages and levels of literacy.
