The acquisition hands OpenAI a louder channel into the tech world just as scrutiny of AI power, policy and influence grows sharper.

  • OpenAI has acquired Technology Business Programming Network (TBPN), a fast-rising tech talk show known for its daily coverage of industry developments.

The announcement was made by Fidji Simo, who leads applications at OpenAI.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

TBPN, founded by entrepreneurs Jordi Hays and John Coogan, has built a following by streaming live discussions on AI, startups, and business trends.

The show airs daily and has become a regular touchpoint for industry watchers tracking rapid developments in artificial intelligence.

The acquisition appears to be part of OpenAI’s broader rethink of how it communicates amid rising scrutiny of AI companies.

In her statement, Simo suggested that traditional corporate communications may not be sufficient for a company operating at the center of a major technological shift.

Rather than building a media arm from scratch, OpenAI is bringing in an existing platform that already engages with developers, founders, and users discussing AI in real time.

TBPN will be integrated into OpenAI’s strategy division and report to Chris Lehane, a senior policy and communications leader at the firm.

TBPN will retain editorial control over its programming, including guest selection and content decisions, OpenAI said, adding that this independence is critical to maintaining the platform’s credibility.

TBPN acknowledged it had previously taken a critical stance on the AI sector, including OpenAI, but said the decision to join the company was influenced by its interactions with leadership, including CEO Sam Altman.

TBPN said it will continue its regular programming across platforms such as YouTube, Spotify, and LinkedIn.

The deal triggered a wave of reactions on X, where users debated the strategic implications of the acquisition.

One user wrote, “OpenAI acquiring a media company right as the AI narrative war heats up is a very deliberate move. Content is the moat now. Curious how TBPN’s coverage shifts from here — or stays the same.”

Another post focused on the potential financial upside and reputational impact;“I’d assume the boys got 7-10x forward revenue, so let’s say $125 million each. Congrats on securing the bag. Well deserved. In return, Sam will get a 7-10x improvement of his image—just debatable where his starting line is.”
