When the IndiaAI Mission was looking for a company to anchor its language model ambitions, Sarvam AI was the obvious choice. Founded in 2023 by Dr Vivek Raghavan, formerly of EkStep, and Dr Pratyush Kumar, a Carnegie Mellon PhD and ex-Microsoft researcher, the startup secured Rs 246.72 crore from the Mission’s Innovation Centre, one of the largest single allocations in the entire cohort.
The bet appears to be paying off. At the IndiaAI Impact Summit 2026, Sarvam unveiled two indigenous foundational models at 30 billion and 105 billion parameters, alongside Bulbul for text-to-speech and Saaras for speech-to-text, both now available on the AIKosh platform.
With $41.3 million raised across three funding rounds and a platform that supports cloud, private cloud, and on-premises deployment, Sarvam is not just building models; it is building the infrastructure layer that enterprise India will eventually run on.
