TCS, TPG Bet Big on India’s AI Compute Future

The joint venture aims to scale AI-ready data-center capacity as enterprises race to secure high-density compute infrastructure.

    Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) will team up with US private equity firm TPG in a joint venture that plans to invest as much as ₹18,000 crore (about $2.2 billion) to build out a new data-centre business focused on AI workloads, the companies said this week.

    The unit, called HyperVault AI Data Centre Ltd, will house all its data-center operations and support the rapid growth of high-density computing in India, TCS said in a stock-exchange filing.

    The two partners will invest in a 51:49 ratio, with TCS holding the majority stake.

    TPG’s contribution of up to ₹8,820 crore is expected to give the private equity firm a final stake of between 27.5% and 49% in HyperVault.

    The capital will be deployed over multiple years and will support the build-out of AI-ready facilities across key Indian markets. 

    TCS said the partnership will reduce its own capital outlay while strengthening relationships with hyperscalers and enterprise clients increasingly shifting to AI-driven compute.

    India currently has about 1.5 GW of installed data-centre capacity, a figure industry analysts expect to rise sharply as cloud usage, regulation-driven localisation and AI applications expand.

    TPG will invest through vehicles including TPG Rise Climate, the firm’s Global South initiative and its Asia real-estate business.

    “Data centres sit at the intersection of green energy infrastructure, technology and real estate,” TPG Executive Chairman Jim Coulter said.

    The transaction is subject to customary regulatory and corporate approvals.

    India has attracted nearly $94 billion in data-centre investment since 2019, TCS said in a blog post, citing rising enterprise demand and local data-storage requirements.

    According to the company, HyperVault will supply infrastructure for hyperscalers, AI developers and enterprises requiring low-latency, high-density compute systems for real-time applications.
