Bertelsmann India Investments, the strategic investment arm of Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA, has been active in India since 2012 as a sector-agnostic, long-term investor. Its portfolio includes Eruditus, Licious, Shiprocket, Lendingkart, Letstransport and other category leaders. BII invests directly from its balance sheet and focuses on founders building technology-enabled platforms in healthtech, fintech, agritech, edtech and digital services.
The firm has earmarked $500 million for India over the next five years, with a mandate to lead and co-lead Series A through Series C rounds. Typical cheques range from $5–15 million, scaling to $40 million as companies mature. Alongside capital, BII emphasizes structural governance, scaling support, and internationalization pathways, tapping the wider Bertelsmann network.
BII positions itself as a collaborative partner and routinely syndicates with other institutional VCs, while maintaining reserves to extend follow-on capital into breakout performers. Its strategy in India rests on concentrated, conviction-led bets, with patient capital and global resources deployed to compound enterprise value over founder journeys that may span a decade or more.
