  • Anthropic has announced a $200 million commitment in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support the use of artificial intelligence in global health, education and economic mobility.

The funding, which will be deployed over four years, includes grants, usage credits for Anthropic’s Claude AI models and technical support for programs in the US and other regions.

The company said the initiative is part of a broader effort to expand the use of AI in areas where commercial incentives alone may be limited.

“This commitment is central to Anthropic’s efforts to extend the benefits of AI in areas where markets alone will not,” the company said.

A significant portion of the partnership will focus on improving healthcare outcomes in low- and middle-income countries, where an estimated 4.6 billion people lack access to essential health services.

Anthropic said it will work with the Gates Foundation and other partners to support vaccine and therapy development, strengthen use of health data and improve decision-making by governments and health systems.

The initiative will also include tools to help researchers and policymakers better evaluate how AI systems perform in healthcare-related applications.

The company said it will expand the use of AI in research on diseases such as polio, human papillomavirus and preeclampsia, which continue to have a high burden in developing regions.

Separately, the partnership will include efforts in education, with a focus on developing AI-powered tools for students in the United States, sub-Saharan Africa and India. These tools are expected to support areas such as tutoring, curriculum development and career guidance.

In economic mobility, the collaboration will explore ways to improve agricultural productivity and job outcomes through AI tools, including support for smallholder farmers and workforce training systems.

Anthropic said the programs will also involve developing public datasets, benchmarks and tools that can be used more broadly across sectors.

“Together, we will explore how AI can make it faster and easier for scientists to screen potential vaccine candidates… before moving into pre-clinical development,” the company said.

The partnership builds on the Gates Foundation’s existing work in public health and education and reflects growing interest in applying AI to large-scale social and economic challenges.
