OpenAI and Broadcom have struck a multi-year deal to co-develop and deploy 10 gigawatts of custom AI accelerators in a push to secure computing power for the company’s next wave of models and services.
The ChatGPT-maker will design the accelerators and rack-scale systems while Broadcom will supply ethernet-based networking and other connectivity to scale clusters across OpenAI sites and partner data centers.
Initial rollouts are slated to begin in the second half of 2026, with full deployment targeted by 2029.
“Partnering with Broadcom is a critical step in building the infrastructure needed to unlock AI’s potential and deliver real benefits for people and businesses,” Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, said. “Developing our own accelerators adds to the broader ecosystem of partners, all building the capacity required to push the frontier of AI to provide benefits to all humanity.”
The companies signed a term sheet covering racks that pair OpenAI’s chips with Broadcom’s ethernet, PCIe and optical links, offering an alternative to Nvidia’s InfiniBand for large AI clusters. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.
“We are thrilled to co-develop and deploy next-generation accelerators and network systems to pave the way for the future of AI,” Hock Tan, President and CEO of Broadcom, said.
For Broadcom, this partnership cements its position as a leader in next-generation AI infrastructure. For OpenAI, it marks a decisive move toward hardware-software integration, accelerating its mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.
With over 800 million weekly active users, OpenAI continues to expand its global footprint, and this collaboration with Broadcom could redefine how the world powers its next wave of AI breakthroughs.
