AI Needs $6 Trillion Revenue to Justify Data Center Boom, Bain Says
Existing AI applications may generate only $1.8 trillion annually by 2031, leaving another $4.2 trillion to be found in emerging markets and technologies.

The global artificial intelligence industry will need about $6 trillion in annual revenue by 2031 to justify the scale of investment in data centers and computing infrastructure, according to Bain & Company.
In its seventh annual Global Technology Report, released on Tuesday, 29 September, Bain estimated that annual AI infrastructure spending could reach $1.5 trillion by 2031. Assuming capital expenditure accounts for roughly a quarter of industry revenue, that would require an AI market generating $6 trillion a year.
Existing consumer and enterprise AI applications could generate between $1.2 trillion and $1.8 trillion, leaving as much as $4.2 trillion to come from new products and markets, Bain said.
Potential sources include AI-powered search and advertising, autonomous vehicles, robotics, industrial automation and digital twins. Emerging applications in drug discovery, mental health and energy generation could also contribute.
“The debate today is fixated on employee productivity. The economics of AI infrastructure demand trillions in new revenue beyond productivity gains,” said David Crawford, chairman of Bain’s global technology practice.
Crawford said the industry would need innovation on a scale exceeding the opportunities created by mobile technology and cloud computing.
Bain warned that AI infrastructure was being built ahead of demand and that sustaining the investment could require adding about one percentage point to annual global GDP growth.
The findings come as technology companies commit billions to data centers, chips and power infrastructure before the returns on those investments are clear.
Bain also found that leading AI data centers are doubling in size every 12 to 16 months, while constraints involving electricity, semiconductors and other infrastructure are increasing costs.
