Google is testing a feature that lets some users in India buy products from Flipkart directly through Gemini and AI Mode, extending its AI shopping services from product discovery to checkout.
The experiment places a Buy button alongside select Flipkart listings, including smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories. Clicking it opens a Flipkart-branded checkout within Google’s AI interface, according to TechCrunch, which viewed the feature and cited people familiar with the test.
The feature is currently available to a limited number of users and products. Other shoppers continue to see ordinary Flipkart listings without a direct purchase option.
Google declined to provide details about the experiment, telling TechCrunch that it regularly tests new ways to help users discover and connect with businesses. Flipkart did not make any comment.
The test follows a broader Google push into what it calls agentic commerce, where AI systems help users move from searching for a product to buying it. Google said earlier this month that Flipkart is among the merchants working with it on agentic shopping experiences in India.
Google has already developed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard intended to let AI agents interact with retailers across product discovery, carts and checkout. The company has said UCP can support purchases directly on Google or transfer shoppers to a retailer to finish the transaction. It has not confirmed whether the Flipkart test is using UCP.
The company had signaled this direction in January, when CEO Sundar Pichai said users would eventually see Buy buttons directly in AI Mode and Gemini. Google later introduced shopping features in India that already show product listings, prices and comparison information inside Gemini and AI Mode.
TechCrunch reported that Google plans a broader rollout later in October, ahead of India’s festive shopping period, though Google has not publicly confirmed that timeline.
