  • Cricket remained India’s undisputed online obsession in 2025, while AI tools stormed into the national search conversation for the first time, Google’s Year in Search report showed.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) was the most-searched term in the country over the past year, topping both the overall rankings and the sports list.

IPL 2025 led a dominant year for cricket, with the Asia Cup, ICC Champions Trophy and the Pro Kabaddi League also featuring prominently among the top results, Google said in a blog post.

The rankings, released as part of Google’s “India’s Year in Search 2025: The A to Z of Trending Searches,” also captured a decisive shift in digital behavior as artificial intelligence broke into the top 10 after being absent last year.

Google Gemini was the second most-searched topic overall, trailed by interest in Grok, DeepSeek, Perplexity, Google AI Studio and Flow.

Google described 2025 as “the year AI became an everyday companion,” noting that Gemini was not only the #2 overall trending search but also led the list of AI-specific queries. The top five AI searches were Gemini, Gemini AI Photo, Grok, DeepSeek and Perplexity.

Curiously, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, despite being the most widely used, did not make the top 10.

“Google Gemini soared to become the #2 top trending search, while people embraced Nano Banana trends,” Google noted, highlighting how AI tools and quirky cultural moments shared the online spotlight.

The top trending searches in India for 2025 were:

    1. Indian Premier League
    2. Google Gemini
    3. Asia Cup
    4. ICC Champions Trophy
    5. Pro Kabaddi League
    6. Maha Kumbh Mela
    7. Women’s World Cup
    8. Grok
    9. Saiyaara
    10. Dharmendra

Alongside sport and technology, the report also reflected cultural and religious currents, with Maha Kumbh Mela, entertainment-linked searches such as Saiyaara, and personalities ranging from actors to singers drawing significant traffic.

Google’s A-to-Z snapshot of trending names and themes ranged from Aneet Padda and Ahaan Panday under ‘A’ to singer Zubeen Garg under ‘Z’.
