As Meta builds more autonomous AI tools, it is mining the ordinary rhythms of office work to sharpen their performance.

Meta is installing tracking software on US employees’ computers to capture mouse movements, clicks and keystrokes, while also taking occasional screenshots, for use in training its AI models, the company told staff in internal memos seen by Reuters.
The tool, called Model Capability Initiative, will run on work-related apps and websites, and was disclosed in a channel belonging to Meta’s SuperIntelligence Labs team.
The purpose, according to the memo, is to improve models in areas where they struggle to replicate how humans interact with computers, like choosing from dropdown menus and using keyboard shortcuts.
“This is where all Meta employees can help our models get better simply by doing their daily work,” it said.
The goal is explicit. In a separate memo, Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth wrote: “The vision we are building towards is one where our agents primarily do the work and our role is to direct, review, and help them improve.”
Meta said the data will not be used for performance reviews or any other purpose, and that safeguards are in place to protect sensitive content.
Meanwhile, the company is preparing to cut up to 20% of its workforce, with the first layoffs expected in May.
