Pushpak Bhattacharyya is a senior professor at IIT Bombay and one of India’s most respected voices in artificial intelligence and language technology. Over more than three decades, he has helped shape how computers process, understand, and generate Indian languages.
He has led projects that include the development of Indian language dictionaries for computers, tools to detect sarcasm, and systems that translate between languages. His work has made it easier for people across India to access digital tools in their native languages.
Outside the classroom, Bhattacharyya is also involved in policymaking. He chairs national committees that guide how India approaches safe and ethical use of AI, especially in areas like banking and digital governance.
