Trump Plans ‘AI Force’ as Industry Urges Caution
The US president says his administration will not slow AI development as leading technology executives call for more time to strengthen safeguards.

US President Donald Trump said he will create an “AI Force” and appoint a new AI czar, rejecting calls from leading technology executives to slow the development of increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems.
Trump gave few details about how the proposed body would operate or where it would sit within the government. He compared it with the Space Force created during his first term and said an AI czar would be named soon.
“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He said existing criminal and civil laws could be used against people who misuse AI.
Trump has cast continued AI development as an economic and strategic priority, particularly in competition with China. AI is also expected to figure in his September 24 meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington.
US and Chinese officials have already discussed a mechanism for notifying each other about serious AI-related security incidents.
His position contrasts with a push by some of the industry’s most prominent executives to slow advances in frontier models.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on developers on September 12 to reduce the pace at which they improve model capabilities, arguing that safety measures need time to catch up. Anthropic also committed to giving independent evaluators greater access to its models.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk backed the broad call. Altman said OpenAI had also been discussing how to pace frontier development and would adopt Anthropic’s proposal for independent evaluators with employee-level access. Musk responded that Amodei was “right.”
The warnings reflect concern over systems becoming more autonomous and capable of carrying out cyber operations with less human supervision. Amodei has warned that sufficiently advanced AI agents could pose much larger cybersecurity risks if capabilities continue to improve faster than safeguards.
Trump has dismissed some of the more severe warnings, including fears that advanced AI could escape human control, as a “hoax,” arguing that slowing US development could strengthen China’s position in the technology race.
