India has launched a nationwide artificial intelligence (AI) skilling drive aimed at training 1 million young people and small entrepreneurs within the next year as part of the government’s push to deepen AI capabilities across the economy.
Union Minister for Electronics and IT and Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the program on Tuesday at the Rajasthan Regional AI Impact Conference in Jaipur.
“AI is no longer a technology of the future,” Vaishnaw said, describing it as a powerful force already transforming sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, manufacturing, governance, and infrastructure.
He emphasized that AI is changing human life and work patterns in real time, making large-scale skilling an urgent priority.
The launch builds momentum toward the Global AI Impact Summit scheduled in New Delhi from 15-20 February, marking the first time the event will be held in the country.
The summit previously took place in the UK, South Korea, and France.
As part of the build-up, regional AI impact summits are being organized across states. Recent editions have been held in Meghalaya and Odisha, with the Jaipur conference forming part of this nationwide series.
Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada said AI is driving significant transformation across sectors and enhancing capacity building. He said the Centre has allocated more than ₹10,000 crore for the IndiaAI Mission, which aims to bring comprehensive change through the adoption of AI technologies.
The Regional AI Impact Conference marked the conclusion of the Rajasthan DigiFest TiE Global Summit. Sector-specific sessions focused on responsible AI use in public service delivery, the future of employment, and skill development.
Organizers said the conference aims to drive governance reforms, economic growth, innovation, and inclusive development through the strategic use of artificial intelligence.
