B.V.R. Subrahmanyam is the Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog, India’s apex public policy think tank. A 1987-batch IAS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre, he holds a degree in engineering from Delhi Technological University and a management degree from London Business School.
Throughout his career, Subrahmanyam has held several high-profile roles. He served as Private Secretary to Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh (2004–2008) and Narendra Modi (2012–2015), and worked at the World Bank in between these tenures. He later managed governance in conflict zones like Chhattisgarh, before being appointed Chief Secretary of Jammu & Kashmir in 2018—a period that saw the revocation of the state’s special status.
Following this, he served as Commerce Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and briefly chaired the India Trade Promotion Organisation. At NITI Aayog, Subrahmanyam is steering the institution’s focus toward sustainable development, innovation-led growth, and urban economic reforms.
