  • Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI is close to raising $300 million to $350 million in a funding round that values the company at $1.5 billion to $1.55 billion, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Bessemer Venture Partners is expected to lead the round, with Nvidia, Amazon and Prosperity7 Ventures also set to participate, the report said.

The fundraising comes as Sarvam seeks to establish itself as India’s homegrown AI contender, with models designed for voice-led use across 22 Indian languages.

At an AI event in February, co-founder Pratyush Kumar said, “Today we show we can bring our own AI to a billion Indians.”

Sarvam was founded in August 2023 by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, according to the company’s website.

It raised a $41 million Series A round in December 2023, the company said at the time, with Lightspeed leading the financing and Peak XV Partners among the investors.

In recent weeks, the company has rolled out a series of products and models.

Sarvam said on 6 March that it was open-sourcing Sarvam 30B and Sarvam 105B, both trained from scratch in India, and said the 105B model powers Indus, its AI assistant.

The company introduced Indus in February and launched Akshar on 15 February as a document intelligence product built on Sarvam Vision, which it describes as a 3B vision-language model for document digitization and visual understanding in Indian languages.
