As someone who’s operated under life-or-death stakes, Walker now translates those lessons into everyday negotiation, leadership, and emotional resilience.

International crisis negotiator and Sunday Times bestselling author Scott Walker, in an exclusive interview with MIT Sloan Management Review India’s Moushmi Sinha, discusses how leaders need to demonstrate trust by first being able to trust others.

As someone who’s operated under life-or-death stakes, Walker now translates those lessons into everyday negotiation, leadership, and emotional resilience.

“When stakes are high, we can allow ourselves to become emotionally hijacked, but leaders need to manage their skills if they have to make effective decisions and lead their teams in times of high stress,” he says. “In boardrooms, the one skill that can be transferred across is building more curiosity than assumption, since assumptions are like earplugs that get in the way of leaders,” Walker adds.

He emphasizes that an environment of psychological safety should be created in boardrooms to make people feel comfortable speaking out. Walker attended the Bengaluru edition of Strategy Shift Forum, hosted by MIT Sloan Management Review India in partnership with Salesforce.
