  • Global companies expect artificial intelligence to accelerate product development and intellectual property (IP) creation at their India technology hubs, Reuters reported, citing executives from Epsilon, Kimberly-Clark and Daimler Truck.

Executives said AI-led automation is moving employees at global capability centers, or GCCs, away from routine work and toward more complex tasks and proprietary technology.

Radhakrishnan Kodakkal, head of Daimler Truck Innovation Centre India, told the Reuters NEXT Asia summit that patents, trade secrets and other intellectual property assets created by GCCs in India are rising and likely to grow further with AI adoption.

India’s GCC sector is projected to reach $98.4 billion in revenue in FY2026, according to a Nasscom-Zinnov report, with more than 2,100 centers employing about 2.36 million people.

Patent activity is also rising. Reuters cited Nasscom data showing patent filings in India rose 11.3% to more than 90,000 in FY24, with nearly half filed by employees of multinational companies.

Executives said India’s contribution to global IP is often understated because many patents generated by teams in the country are filed through parent companies in the US or Europe.

Deena Dayalan, global head of digital operations and cloud transformation at Kimberly-Clark, told Reuters the company often files patents in the US because India’s patent process is slower.

She said filings in India can take five to six months, compared with about half that time in the US.

Reuters also cited experts who said India’s patent process is slowed by procedural requirements and staffing constraints, including fewer than 1,000 examiners and controllers compared with about 8,000 at the US Patent and Trademark Office.
