Gita Gopinath served as First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund from January 2022 until August 2025, becoming the IMF’s second-in-command after previously serving as Chief Economist from 2019. She was the first woman to hold the role of IMF Chief Economist and oversaw multiple editions of the World Economic Outlook during a period marked by the pandemic, inflation shocks and geopolitical disruption.
As First Deputy Managing Director, Gopinath supervised the IMF’s policy, research and surveillance work, represented the institution at G7 and G20 meetings, and played a central role in crisis response programs for member countries. During her tenure as Chief Economist, she co-developed the IMF’s Integrated Policy Framework to guide member countries on managing capital flows and financial stability risks.
Gopinath is currently the Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics at Harvard University. She holds a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University, master’s degrees from the Delhi School of Economics and the University of Washington, and a bachelor’s degree from Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi. Her research focuses on international finance, exchange rates, sovereign debt and global macroeconomics.
